Rehearsals this weekThursday, January 8th @ 3-4:30pm in Room 110- This is for cast members who have received a named part (yes, this includes Woman). We'll be reading through the script together. Friday, January 9th @ 12:45-1:45pm in the auditorium- This is an ALL CAST rehearsal to discuss expectations, decide ensemble groups and get excited to do this show together. Parent Musical MeetingThe Parent Musical Meeting is going to be on Friday, January 16th from 2:45-3:15pm. We'll be meeting in the auditorium immediately following the rehearsal. I know it's part of a long weekend so if you can't make it, please be sure to view the digital version that I will email out. Rehearsal ScheduleThe rehearsal schedule that is on the website is our tentative schedule moving forward. We'll try to keep things as is, but sometimes we have to adjust due to unforeseen circumstances. I know many of you have been working to move lessons and appointments and have questions about WHEN your student is going to rehearse. That is being decided on Friday when your student joins an ensemble group. Musical Numbers BreakdownALL CAST numbers:
8th grade featured number (for all 8th graders who can be in it)
Optional numbers- this means everyone who wants to can be in these songs. Please note, that if you decide to be in one of these, we need you at ALL the rehearsals for that song. You can be in as many of these as you want or none at all. It's up to you and the time you have.
Speaking Roles: You can find what numbers you are in on the rehearsal schedule when you click on the event to see more details. You'll also see at rehearsal on Thursday what songs you will need to learn. Ensemble GroupsWe wanted to give you all a breakdown of the ensemble group options so you can discuss them before Friday. Please choose a group that works for your schedule.
1. The Vaudeville Performers- this ensemble group is for girls only and will rehearse the song on a Monday and Wednesday.
2. Striking Newsies- in this number we need a lot of strong emotion so this is more acting heavy. The rehearsal for this is on a Tuesday and Thursday.
3. Reporters- in this number you will not be singing. It is mainly a dancing group. This rehearsal is on a Monday.
4. Dancing/Tumbling Newsies- this number rehearses on a Monday and Tuesday. This is a dance heavy number with lots of tumbling, dance breaks and an opportunity for more featured dancing.
5. The Dreamers- You'll be doing dream-like sequences in 2 songs and also be in scenes as New Yorkers. In the songs you will only be doing movement and not singing. We'll add you to the scenes a little later so don't worry about scene rehearsals just yet. The rehearsals for these songs are on a Monday and Wednesday.
6. Tapping Newsies- This is for all of you who know how to tap dance. Prior knowledge and skill is required for this group. The rehearsals for this are on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
7. King Newsies- This is for those of you who are not tap dancers, but want to be in this number. We are only having 7th and 8th graders in this group and we are capping this group to 20 people. Please don't email us about getting to be one of those 20. This will all be discussed on Friday. The rehearsals for this are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Thank you to all who have auditioned! Please find your name and the role below.
If you received a role (anything other than ensemble), please come to the Read Through rehearsal on January 8th from 3-4:30pm. Thank you for allowing your student to participate in the musical this year! We've had 143 students come and audition for the musical. That's almost double the amount we've had in years past. It's going to be AMAZING! The cast list will be posted today right after school. It will be posted on the Counseling Center windows and on the WJH theatre website. Everyone who auditioned will be in the show. If your child's name is not on the list, it is a clerical error. Please let Ms. Emily Thompson know so we can get that fixed. Expect emotions from your student with the result. It will either be elated, meh, disappointed, sad or angry. It's okay to feel the feelings when results are posted. If your child is feeling disappointed, sad or angry at the results, please help them work through healthy ways to deal with this emotion. Please remind them that we don't use our hurt feelings to hurt others. Each role whether small or large is an opportunity to learn and grow. As a mom of theatre kids myself, casting results can also be really hard for us parents. We see how amazing our kids are and want the best for them which includes getting leading roles. I've definitely felt disappointed or sad when my daughter didn't receive the role she was hoping for. As the director, these are the things I want you to know:
Double casting - If there are two people who fit perfectly in the same spot equally on the jigsaw puzzle (in a school musical), then we will double cast. This year, for Newsies, we have not double cast any roles. Double casting often leads to comparison. This comparison hurts students more and creates more problems in the long run. I'm really looking forward to starting rehearsals. I wish you could've heard them sing at auditions. It was incredible and we have only just begun! Sincerely, Ms. Emily Thompson P.S. Apologies to all those who have emailed and never heard any response. We just found emails stuck in a different inbox folder. We believe it is fixed now. So if you emailed us and never received a response, we deeply apologize. Thank you to everyone who has auditioned! It has been so fun to watch all of your incredible talent in singing, acting and dancing. Everyone who has auditioned will be in the cast. The cast list will be posted next week.
The people listed below need to come back and audition some more. Some of you will just be needed for one day and others will be needed for both. If you are unable to attend callbacks, please let Ms. Emily Thompson know. When is the performance?
The performance is March 25th-28th. 2. Where will the auditions be? The speaking role auditions and callbacks will be in the theatre room, room 110. Dance Auditions will be held in the auditorium. 3. Who will be in the audition room? There will be 4 other students who have signed up for the same time slot that will be in the room with you along with the musical creative team (Ms. Emily Thompson, Ms. Whiting, and Ms. Kossin) and a scene reader, Ms. Holly. 4. Will the musical be double cast? We don’t know yet. It depends on many factors that we won’t see until callbacks. 5. Do you have to be memorized? It is strongly suggested that you are. Being memorized allows you to be free to fully perform. However, if you can’t get it memorized, you may absolutely bring the paper in and read off of it. 6. Will we be singing to music at the audition? Yes! The music provided for you in the character google folders is the music that will be used. The only difference is that we will not play the one with the person singing. We will only play the music without any singer so that we can hear you sing clearly. 7. Can I just audition to be a dancer? We will have a featured dancers group in this musical. However, all performers are expected to sing and act as well as dance. If you are interested in being in the featured dancers group, you will need to attend Dance Auditions and sign up to be in the ensemble. 8. When will Callbacks be posted? The callbacks list will be posted in the days following speaking role auditions. 9. What do I do if I need to leave the Dance Auditions before 5pm? Please talk to Ms. Emily Thompson. She is keeping a list of students who have to go first in the dance auditions so they can leave early. 10. Is there choreography we need to learn before the Dance Auditions? No, at the dance auditions you will learn a short dance combo from Ms. Whiting. You will have time to practice before you go up and dance with a group. 11. What if I’m not a good dancer or singer? Come audition! You don’t have to be a good dancer, singer or actor to be in the musical. In fact, if you do the musical you will have the chance to learn and become better in those areas. Newsies has quite a few non-singing and non-dancing roles if you don’t feel comfortable in those areas yet. 12. If I’m auditioning for the ensemble, do I have to sing the Ensemble song by myself? No, those auditioning to be in the Ensemble will sing with a large group during Dance Auditions. The only people expected to sing songs by themselves are the people trying out for a speaking role. The Newsies Audition Packets are out now! This packet is required to be in Newsies as this is the permission slip to be in it.
Speaking role audition time signup has been officially posted in the hallway by room 110. Sign up for a time on December 8th or 9th. Again, this is only for those looking to be a speaking role. Those who want to be in the ensemble only have to attend the Dance Auditions on December 11th from 3-5pm. Please be sure you are practicing with the music provided so you are ready to sing with it at auditions. We will only be playing the track without the person's voice. All the music can be found in each character's folders along with the scene and sheet music. Here's also a look at the tentative rehearsal schedule. |
